Iron Deficiency Anemia

This course has been designed to provide information for nurses on Iron Deficiency (ID) and Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) including treatment of ID/IDA, administering Intravenous (IV) Iron and managing infusion reactions.​

NOTE: This program provides knowledge. Safe and appropriate administration of IV iron requires knowledge, skill, and judgement (i.e., clinical competence). After completing this program, it is recommended that you connect with a clinical practice educator or competent peer in your practice setting to support you to develop necessary skills and clinical judgement to administer IV iron safely and appropriately in your practice setting.

 

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, nurse participants will be better able to;

  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of ID and IDA in the adult population;

  • Describe effective screening questions for ID and IDA in clinical practice;

  • Understand the clinical indications and goal of iron treatment modalities;

  • Detect common hypersensitivity reactions and relative patient management;

  • Discuss the relevant patient education required for IV iron infusions (pre-infusion, during infusion and post infusion);

  • Apply the practical applications of IV iron administration to a real-life case study within this presentation.
